Joanne Pemberton

Biography

"I love the physicality of printmaking, it requires you to use your whole body which results in a heightened sense of presence and awareness when making the work.

My favourite way to learn is from other people. I think it is really special learning traditions that have been passed down through generations. After learning the lessons you can then add your own essence to them.

The processes in printmaking give me freedom to let go of creative control. The unpredictability of some of the fluid and painterly techniques in lithography help me to let go of attachment to the final image which I believe makes me a better artist."

BIOGRAPHY

Joanne Pemberton works in print and sculpture to map geographical discoveries and encounters within the city, landscape, archive, and print studio.

Her work is derived from a fascination with the repeated cycles and transformative processes that happen with rocks and fossils. She is interested in making the invitible visible, and attempting to capture the uncontainable nature of earth. Examining her relationship with geology in different contexts has led to personal revelations of how interactions with materials and objects can help us comprehend our place within deep time.

Joanne graducated from Glasgow School of Art Maters programme in 2022 and has recently spent the summer stufying at Tamarind Institute for Lithography.
