This programme will be developed at Castle Mills from 2017-2019. It is intended that commissioned artists will use the building as a matrix for a series of new artwork commissions, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. These commissions will be integral to the architectural design process and the redeveloped fabric of the building, and will offer a major opportunity for heritage interpretation in a contemporary context to enrich the visitor experience.
It is anticipated that the artworks programme will combine visual art, craft and design, drawing out the building’s rich heritage, and the history of the surrounding area. Topographic and digital formats will enable visitors to navigate around the building and interact with hidden histories and a distinguished industrial past. In addition the resultant artist interventions will form the basis of visitor tours that will run weekly, to be delivered by artist member volunteers.
