The 2019 courses of Edinburgh Printmakers at Castle Mills
Studio Director, Alastair Clark introduces the 2019 courses for Edinburgh Printmakers at Castle Mills
As the opening of Castle Mills fast approaches in spring 2019, here’s a little about our new courses and what you can expect in the heritage print studio.
It’s bigger, it’s brighter and the heating works. There’s also disabled access and you can arrive by tram, bus, walking, taxi or boat - the canal provides us with new opportunities. Castle Mills doesn’t have a helipad.
Regarding printmaking equipment: some is new, there are surprises that I have been storing in secret for years and other bits, bobs and presses are our favourites’ from Union Street. I’m particularly proud that finally the etching press donated by Willie Rodger will be in location in our learning studio.
But which course should you choose? What have we programmed and why? Let’s start with the most challenging first - our Masterclasses. I’ve gone for a full range - in our first year we will cover Experimental Stone Lithography, Monotype, Screenprinting, Wood Engraving, Drawing and Linocut and Mezzotint. They range between one and two stars in difficulty, with some being intermediate and others detailed introductions.
If getting creative at the weekend is more you, Jodi, Leena, Anupa, Jess and myself are leading weekend workshops on etching, Toyobo, Photo-plate Lithography, Waterbased screenprinting, Photo-etching and Digitial imaging with photo lithography. On the last you bring your photos to turn into prints, it’s a great challenging three star weekend which will be more enjoyable due to our lovely new spacious yellow safe light room for plate making.
Our six week evening classes are the best way to progress your skills and take a project from beginning to completion with our guidance. There’s a bounteous spread on offer including Relief printing, Etching, Stone Lithography, Screenprinting and Printmaking in Animation.
Finally if you’ve never made a print, or want to buy a friend or family member a gift, I recommend one of our many introductory courses that are on throughout the year. Keep an eye out for our summer school programme which will be launched in spring time too.
Whatever you choose I look forward to welcoming you to Castle Mills, it’s rich heritage and printmaking with Edinburgh Printmakers.
