Rachel Maclean is one of the most rapidly rising stars of the contemporary Scottish art scene. Her work frequently prods and amplifies the less savoury aspects of modern life, toying with notions of superficial celebrity, glamour, nationalism and technology. Playing with kitsch, Maclean’s work is often tongue-in-cheek, although its humour is often intertwined with dark, unsettling commentary on self-obsessed western culture.

As one of our Artist Patrons, Rachel Maclean has donated this edition of 20 to our fundraising campaign. The print Maclean has produced for Edinburgh Printmakers incorporates an image of herself wearing lion-esque facial prosthetics. The character is taken from her short film, The Lion and The Unicorn, and symbolises the English government. Dealing with the issue of Scottish independence in the run-up to the referendum, the film highlights pertinent political arguments whilst also exaggerating the grotesque aspects of English and Scottish views on the matter.

The money from the sale of The Lion will go towards Edinburgh Printmakers’ fundraising campaign, and in so doing will help secure the best possible facilities for Castle Mill Works, the organisation’s new home in Fountainbridge. The Lion is available now to buy on our website.

Maclean was selected to represent Scotland in Venice at the 57th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, which ran from 13th May to 26th November 2017. Her other awards include Glasgow Film Festival’s Margaret Tait Award, which she received in 2013. She was also recently nominated for The Jarman Award and her work was included in The Jarman Award’s Touring Programme in 2016. Additionally, she was commissioned by the BBC to create a portrait of Billy Connolly, as seen on Billy Connolly: A Portrait of a Lifetime (2017).
